Keep Local Farms

Connecting New Englanders with
local dairy farm families.
May 2011

Did you know that 98% of dairy farms are family owned and operated? Rebecca Howrigan, dairy farmer in Swanton, VT, knows a thing or two about working side-by-side with her grandparents, father and brothers 365 days a year. Learn why being close to family is one of the highlights of her job as a dairy farmer by visiting the "Meet Local Farmers" section on KeepLocalFarms.org.

An education in farming

We love connecting people to where their milk comes from which is why we took college students from Boston University and Harvard University to two local dairy farms last month.

Boston University students traveled to Smith's Country Cheese in Winchendon, MA, to visit farmstead cheesemaker, Dave Smith. They learned everything about making cheese, from how cows are milked to how cheese is stored, aged and packaged for sale. They even had the chance to taste-test some new cheese flavors, a task they were eager to accept. Read more about their experience on our blog.

At Great Brook State Park in Carlisle, MA, Harvard students learned that dairy farming is keeping up with the times using modern technology and innovation.Tamma Duffy led students on a tour of her dairy farm equipped with fans in the barn to keep the cows cool, a back scratcher for the cows, and even a robotic milker! Put away your images of three legged stools and pails, the twenty-first century is alive and well on today's dairy farms.Click here to view additional photos.

Mmmm, cheese!

What do you get when you bring together six local cheese companies, dozens of Harvard University students and one knowledgeable cheesemaker? One educational and delicious cheese tasting event!

Allison Hooper, of Vermont Butter & Cheese Creamery, provided a seminar on cheesemaking at Harvard for students interested in local dairy products. The students sampled different cheeses as they learned from one of the best in the business. If you were at the event, post a comment on our Facebook page telling us what your favorite part of the night was.

Hannaford did it again

In 2010, Hannaford Supermarkets raised $10,500 for our program through customer contributions at the register. This year they raised the bar and when it was all said and done, total contributions raised for Keep Local Farms was $46,000! The contribution was a combination of money given at the register from shoppers as well as contributions from brand partners.

Thank you to Hannaford and to all of those who participated and made the 2011 promotion a huge success.
