It's maple syrup season, which means spring is on the way! In addition to producing milk, many dairy farms also produce delicious maple syrup. Celebrate the start of spring this month with a maple syrup milkshake. Just combine milk, vanilla ice cream and maple syrup. Enjoy!

Congratulations to the winners of our "Hit the Dairy Aisle and Head to the Slopes" January promotion at Co-op Food Stores.

Shoppers won ski vacations, gear and lift tickets just for buying qualifying dairy products at the store. Increasing dairy sales at the supermarket helps dairy farms stay in business so thanks to everyone who purchased products during the promotion.

    Where is your milk bottled?
asdf asdf

How do you know if your milk is bottled locally? Look for the code.

Each dairy product has a number code on the package. The first two numbers of the code tell you what state the milk is processed in and the rest of the code indicates the processing plant.

The codes for New England are: Connecticut 09; New Hampshire 33; Massachusetts 25; Rhode Island 44; Vermont 50; Maine 23. If a code starts with these numbers, you know the product was bottled right here in New England.

The Taft farm started with only ten cows but now three generations later, the farm has grown to 220 cows. Unfortunately, during that same time all the other dairy farms in town have gone out of business leaving the Taft farm the only one in Huntington.

Tim Taft has seen the effects of dairy farms going out of business and is working hard to keep his farm active to help maintain a beautiful and fertile landscape, habitat for wildlife, economic activity and an enjoyable way of life.

Find out more about Tim and Taft's Milk and Maple Farm by watching his video in the "Meet Local Farmers" section of KeepLocalFarm.org.
