Keep Local Farms

Connecting New Englanders with
local dairy farm families.
June 2011

June is National Dairy Month and a great reminder to "drink to your health" with wholesome, delicious milk -- a Stanley Cup-size glass is recommended! That or you can stick to the three servings of low-fat and fat-free milk, cheese and yogurt the 2010 Dietary Guidelines recommend. Milk, along with cheese and yogurt provide nine essential nutrients that are important for healthy living. So while you are participating in your summer adventures, we hope you remember to enjoy the refreshment of an ice-cold glass of milk, a smooth, creamy cup of yogurt, or the satisfying flavor of cheese.

Milkshake Mustache?

Shake it up for Keep Local Farms this summer at select Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops!

During the month of June, visit the Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops in Burlington or Waterbury, VT and for every milkshake sold they will contribute $1 to Keep Local Farms.

Then in July, the promotion comes to Boston where the Boston-area and Natick Scoop Shops will be rolling out limited-time Brown Cow and Purple Cow milkshakes in honor of hard-working New England dairy farmers. Keep Local Farms will receive $1 every time you purchase these limited-time shakes.

Supporting local dairy farms never tasted so good! Be sure to stop in at participating Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops today.

Farmer Spotlight:
John Luther
Acworth, NH

Parnassus Farm in Acworth, NH, is home to the John Luther family. Farm work, including milking forty Holsteins and a few Jersey cows, keeps John going from 5:30 AM until about 7:30 PM, seven days a week. His love of the outdoors, fresh air, animals and the history associated with farming continues to motivate him.

All of the cows at Parnassus Farm have a name, given to them by John's daughter. Names such as Grape, Easter and Fairy are just a few that you will find in the herd. If you had a dairy cow, what would you name her? Tell us on Facebook.

For more information about the Parnassus Farm and other New England dairies, visit the Meet Local Farmers section of KeepLocalFarms.org.
