Eating well during the holidays

The holiday season is the most difficult time of year to stay on a healthy diet. Who can resist walking by the dessert tray at a party or reaching for a marshmallow snowman at the super market check-out counter?

Here are some great tips to help you stay on track and not go overboard this holiday!

Preparation power – Never go to a holiday party or meal hungry. Eat a nutrient-rich breakfast and lunch to avoid overeating during the event.

Make calories count – Focus the holiday menu around nutrient-rich foods such as low-fat or non-fat dairy, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Combine low-fat or non-fat yogurt with fresh herbs as a dip and serve with a variety of vegetables or whole grain pita chips. Make some fruit and cheese kabobs or stay warm with a bowl of cheesy broccoli potato soup.

Portion control – Bite-sized portions are perfect for sampling tantalizing treats without guilt. Desserts and baked goods don’t have to be off limits if eaten in small amounts. Portion control also allows the opportunity to sample more kinds of foods.

Drink smart – Holiday drinks can quickly add on calories, so use some simple swaps when you can. For example, make your own low-fat version of traditional holiday eggnog by using low-fat or non-fat milk. Try alternating alcoholic beverages with a glass of sparkling water to pace yourself and save room for dinner.
